Galactica for Gold?

Since it’s debut back in 2008, Battlestar Galactica has enjoyed high praise from almost all corners. Personally I haven’t gotten the game to the table but I really really want to. However, I’m not the only one as the Unboxed contributors managed to nominate BSG four times!

Battlestar Galactica

Nominated for Best Value, Most Innovative and Game of the Year

Designed by Corey Konieczka Battlestar Galactica is based on the SyFy series of the same name (although back when it was called the Sci Fi Channel… sigh). The game is essentially a much expanded version of Werewolf. One or more players are secretly Cylons (Evil robots indistinguishable from Humans), working against the other players in order to bring them to their destruction.

The game features a beautiful board with very nice plastic replicas of the ships from the show. It is also one of the first FFG games to feature their, now Trade Mark, dials. The mechanics of the game are simple, but designed in such a way as to breed paranoia.

The game is highly commended by almost all, including the D6Generation, Cody and John from Game On and Tom from the Dice Tower, but don’t take my word for it, check out his video.

Battlestar Galactica Pegasus Expansion

And if you couldn’t get enough Battlestar well FFG released an expansion. (Really???)

Despite most people agreeing that the New Caprica section of this expansion was less satisfactory (can’t tell you if they’re wrong or not ‘cause I don’t own it :( ) Pegasus is still pretty well regarded. How much of that regard is due to the fact that the box included plastic Basestars to replace the cardboard ones from the base game I don’t know.

The expansion also comes with a variety of new options, including the Cylon Leaders variant where a player can take on the role of a Cylon Leader who may or may not be working towards the good of humanity. And of course, the Pegasus herself makes an appearance, lending her rather powerful guns to the battle and the use of her airlock to help in discovering those nasty Cylon traitors.

The new characters and the New Caprica ending allow fans of the series to take the next step in the journey, this time going from where the first game left off on Kobol to the occupation of New Caprica.
